Background
The Center for Home Care Policy and Research of the Visiting Nurse Service of NY (VNSNY) and the Columbia University School of Nursing (CUSON) share a common purpose – to advance knowledge, improve practice and inform policy that results in improved health and well being.
To that end we are seeking to make one or more VNSNY Professor at CUSON faculty appointments, where researchers can pursue shared initiatives in multi-cultural, community-based research, as well as clinical and “translational” scholarship and informatics, aimed at mobilizing the best scientific evidence to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities. The collaboration will offer opportunities not only for collaborative grant-funded research activities but also for collaboration in education and training.
The Position: VNSNY Scholar/Professor at ColumbiaUniversitySchool of Nursing
The two institutions seek an established, senior nursing research scholar with a strong record of funded research and a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and education in one or more fields aimed at improving care and optimizing the health and quality of life of individuals and populations living in the community with chronic illness and/or functional or cognitive impairment or depression. Relevant fields of expertise include but are not restricted to geriatrics, chronic disease, health and behavior, health services, public health or informatics. The position provides a unique opportunity to build on the patient population of VNSNY and on the rich resources of both institutions to advance knowledge that promotes the delivery of quality health care, influences health care policy and improves the lives of people with complex health care needs.Responsibilities include developing/sustaining an externally funded VNSNY-Columbia shared program of research, as well as mentoring and teaching research staff, junior faculty, fellows, and graduate students at VNSNY and Columbia University School of Nursing.
The occupant of this senior position will be responsible for determining critical research and practice issues, obtaining external funding for and leading nationally significant, high quality, practice or policy relevant research in areas at the intersection of nursing, home health care and the larger health care system. She/he will provide leadership in the conceptualization, design, conduct, dissemination and translation of this research. This individual also will be responsible for developing relationships and collaborating with VNSNY clinical and administrative staff, as well as subject matter and methodological experts from academic, nursing, public health and medical fields, and attracting outside government and philanthropic resources to support research for multi-tiered and large scale research and evaluation projects on significant policy and practice issues.
Requirements for the Position
• PhD or equivalent in nursing, public health, gerontology, health services research or other related clinical or policy area.
• A stellar research record withnational/internationalrecognition for contributions to nursing, public health, post-acute or long-term care, chronic care, etc.
• Experience with collaborative research projects, research design and research project management, as well as experience in mentoring junior staff, fellows and students
• Experience in conducting applied research in communities; health care delivery, health policy or managed care organizations; health institutions or the like
• A proven publication record
• Successful track record in obtaining funding (NIH, other government, foundation, etc.)
• A minimum of 5 years of experience as a principal investigator responsible for conducting, managing and obtaining funding for large-scale independent research, including funded and published research in an academic, clinical or health policy related research setting.
• Strong qualitative and quantitative skills
• Effective oral, written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required
Location
The position is located in New York City and the position occupant will spend “in-person” time at both VNSNY and the Columbia University School of Nursing.
