Model Program for Reducing Breast Cancer Disparities
The Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force is gaining national recognition as a model for citywide collaboration to address racial disparities in health care. The Task Force, which is currently made up of 74 health care organizations and more than 100 breast cancer experts, was formed in March 2007 in response to an alarming study from the Sinai Urban Health Institute which found that the breast cancer mortality rate for African American women in Chicago was 68% higher than that of white women. Over the last two years, the Task Force has held town meetings and released a landmark report containing 37 recommendations for addressing disparities in breast cancer mortality. Those recommendations, along with more information about this successful model program that could be replicated in other cities, can be found online at www.chicagobreastcancer.org.
