My Dream

Hello everyone! My name is Suzana and I am new to this forum. I am an RN who realy, realy wants to be CRNA. At this point in my life, it realy feels that it is not possible. Here is my story..
I have immigrated to US 7 years ago, and I was 19. I have had the strongest desire to go to college, it was my the most importrant goal. However, my parents were unable to work, and my brother was very little at the time, so I had to start working immediatelly in order to support my family. My college dream was crushed, and new that being a student will never be my primary role. But, i did not give up. I have started taking classes at the community college shortly after my arrival to US, along with full time work in factory. In course of a year, I highly progressed in my english and skills, and I have got a job in doctor's office as a clerk. I continued my general studies, but problems start arrising. I had to take another, part time job which totaly took the focus off of the school. 3 years after coming to us I got into nursing school, year later I have graduated with associate degree, worked in icu since and got my bachelors in 2009 while working full time or more the entire time. I ended up with gpa of 2.9, mostly due to repeating classes, dropping classes (unofficialy which resulted in F's which i did not know about, simply nobody told me that)because I had to pick up more work, and because all the nursing classes were very time consuming, and that is the only thing that i did not have. The interesting part is, all my science courses are A's with one or two B's. Now, I still take care of my family, but it is a little easier. I have decided to take the chance and start prerequisits for the admision in CRNA program, and guess what! My dad got let go of his job after 3.5 years working there, and I had to help them out, which took tool on me and now I am doing poorly in my physics class. My coworkers and doctors I work with say that I am smart, that i would be wonderful CRNA, and I should go for it. My fiance says that I am too exhausted, and that I should rest for a year and try to bring up my gpa with more classes. I am so discouraged because I am doing poorly in my physics class, and I have feeling that I will never be ready to apply... But I want it so, so bad! That is my dream, as soon as decided to be a nurse! What do you think? Is it possible for me? Should I listen to my fiance? Maybe is just not meant to be....

RE: My Dream

Hello Dreamer, and other Dreamers who are struggling to see how they might make it to and through a nurse anesthesia program someday.

I am currently in the last 9 months of my Masters in Nurse Anesthesia program. I am married with two children aged 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 years. Certainly, it is tough going through this program with two young children, and Dreamer, I think it would be tough for you also if you are trying to support your parents as well as yourself while you are in school.

But, I do believe with proper planning and preparation, your dream can become your reality. It has for me, and I believe it can and will happen for others.

Just from your posting, you have shared with us the story of why your grades have been less than you would have hoped for, but still you have excelled in science and math courses up until this Physics class when you had to suddenly take on more family responsibilities. I think that much of poor grades could be explained well in the applications you will make to nurse anesthesia programs, but only if you find a way to ensure that your studies will not be interrupted by sudden family responsibilities in the future so that you can excell from here on out.

I think your fiance could be right in saying for you to take a little bit of a break to regroup and prepare for the future. During the time that you are not actively applying to nurse anesthesia school, you could be saving money to help cover family emergencies in the future, take one course at a time to ensure you have time to do well in each one, speak with your parents about your future plans and come to an agreement about how much they can rely on you financially in the future when you are preparing for or in school, and be sure to study well for the GRE. I was able to overcome a lower than average GPA with stellar GRE scores by studying really hard for that test.

I really believe you can do this. It will simply take time and preparation and perserverance. I hope something I said is a little helpful.

Sincerely,

Adonai
